The distance from Jamaica, Windham,  Vermont to Royalton, Windsor, Vermont is 82.53 miles.  I've decided that Abiathar Smith Robinson b: December 1829, my ggrandfather, came from Jamaica, Windham, Vermont since I believe that his father was actually Hiram Robinson, Jr. b: March 18, 1809 in Jamaica and mother was Sally "Sarah" Smith born January 1812 also in Jamaica, Vermont.  This is because Abiathar and his wife, Julia Ann Tuller, had moved to Wenona, Marshall, Illinois and were buried there along with Sally and her 2nd husand and their children, Thomas Russell-spouse, and son:  Martin Russell.

Abiathar said on later censuses that he was born in New York and later said it was Vermont.  "In the colonial period, what is now Vermont was disputed territory, with land claims from both New York and New Hampshire. The original grants for this area, issued by the Royal Governor of New York in 1767 and 1772, were for two towns. But in 1777, the Republic of Vermont was established. Ignoring the previous grants, it gave charter on November 7, 1780 for “a tract of vacant land within this state which has not heretofore been granted.”By 1781 the village was settled and organized.  In 1790, the year we had a USA 1st census, they had 263 people.  By 1830 there were 1,553 people living here.

Now to find other Jamaicans  who moved from Jamaica to Royalton or next door to Tunbridge, Vermont which Abiathar did since he met and married Julia Ann Tuller in Royalton.  They married in Tunbridge on February 29, 1852.  Was this leap year?

Today there are 7 Robinsons who are living in Jamaica, Vermont with many living in the surrounding areas.  I have found 14 male Robinsons  on findagrave who died there in the early days:

If you're following my story of trying to find Abiathar Smith Robinson, my ggrandfather's father.  On the 1850 census of Royalton, Vermont, we find Julia Ann Tuller, age 15.  She married Abiathar later on.  Abiathar was not on this census taken on October 28th , but living with the Tuller family and listed was a JOHN ROBINSON AGE 51.  He had no wife listed.  He was alone.  Abiathar must have been courting Julia then, as they married on February 29, 1852 in Tunbridge, Orange, Vermont-next door to Royalton where there were lots of Robinsons, Tullers, and Durkees.  Julia's mother was a Durkee.

Now, lo and behold, today I ran across John Milton Robinson living in Windsor, Vermont!  Oh my gosh!  He, upon checking, actually was living in Weathersfield, Windsor, Vermont, about 42 miles from Royalton, Windsor, Vermont where Julia Ann Tuller lived.  He was born at the right time to be Abiathar's father.  February 15, 1800.  Remember, the census said 1799 as he was 51 in 1850.

Just like the information on elusive John Robinson of Tunbridge, neither one had a wife listed.  The wife of John Milton Robinson was not listed and evidently there was only the one son, the never listed anywhere:  Abiathar Smith Robinson b: December 1829.  It was when Abiathar married Julia and wound up in Wenona, Marshall, Illinois, that we finally got some information on him, very sketchy information.  We know from Abiathar's son and my grandfather, Frank Hugh Robinson, that Abiathar was very religious and strict about the Sabbath.  He would not allow Frank to take out his horse from the field with the bull that got in it, thus saving the life of his horse because it was Sunday.  Frank ran away from home because of this and never returned.  He lost complete contact.

So, John Milton Robinson looks like a good candidate, too.  I followed this lead and it brought me to
people I already had on my tree from previous theories, and this led to Reverend John Robinson of our Pilgrim Story who sent the Pilgrims to America on the Mayflower  like this:

"Robinson was born at Sturton-Le-Steeple in Nottinghamshire, England between March and September 1576."
                                                                               

A Thanksgiving was celebrated with the Indians who taught them how to grow corn and find food. They celebrated for 3 days!  A wonder being half of the Pilgrims died right off after landing.  Isaac Robinson could have been there.

The John Robinson, Reverend descendants have their own webpage that I had found and nobody had an Abiathar Smith Robinson ancestor.  I checked with their leader, and he had had a DNA test.  His DNA was the same as my male cousin's, EXPECT, his DYS 393 was a 13, and ours was a 12.  So I had dropped the idea.  That was only one person out of a zillion who had bothered to take the test and report.  Should I be stopped by one person's test?  I figured I should and dropped that lead that was with another person, now lost to me but probably somewhere on the tree.  I have zillions of Robinsons now on my tree and many possible sets of  parents.

No, I don't think our Robinson is from this line, even though John Milton was so close to Royalton.  It's just that it's things like this that make tracing a man with unknown parents or wife very very difficult and that's why DNA testing is so important.  Back to the elusive plain old John Robinson of Tunbridge, Vermont.  At least he leads to a DNA match on a twig of that branch.

Update 3/27/17: I looked at the facts again connected to where Abiathar and Julia Ann are buried:  Wenona, Marshall, Illinois.  The facts are much stronger there that Abiathar Smith Robinson is the son of Sally Smith  who was married to Hiram Robinson, Jr married on April 1, 1829.  He then died in 1839.  This is where my first assumption had picked Hiram as the father.  Sally is also buried in Wenona.  We also have another son buried there of Hiram's;  Oscar L. Robinson born in Bennington but buried in Wenona, Illinois and his wife, Sarah E. Powell. Sally remarried Thomas Russell since Hiram died very young at age 30.  Son Martin Russell is buried in Wenona.   How I'll connect to my DNA match, Sherie now, I don't know.  Her ancestor must have married into the family somehow.  Our line again ends up with a George Robinson b: 1639 in Boston, Massachusetts and wife Mary Bushnell of 1638 Ten Hills Farm, Medford, Massachusetts.  Yes, if his parents came over in the 1630 convoy of ships headed for America, he would have been born in Boston, MA.  That was the story my grandfather Frank Hugh Robinson related.

Dorchester is a historic neighborhood comprising over 6 square miles (16 km2) in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. Originally, Dorchester was a separate town, founded by Puritans who emigrated in 1630 from Dorchester, Dorset, England. This dissolved municipality, Boston's largestneighborhood by far,  is often divided by city planners in order to create two planning areas roughly equivalent in size and population to other Boston neighborhoods. So our Robinson ancestors could have come from Dorset, England.   "Dorset is a county in South West England on the English Channel coast. The ceremonial county comprises the non-metropolitan county, which is governed by Dorset County Council, and the unitary authority areas of Poole and Bournemouth."

Working with the elusive John Robinson who lived with Julia Ann Tuller's parents in Royalton, who was 51 on the 1850 census, I have a possible new branch going back to Dorchester, Massachusetts.
                                                                     

Tunbridge, Orange, Vermont

John, I found, must be the John Robinson in Tunbridge, Vermont.  Abiathar and Julia Ann Tuller got married there on February 29, 1852 by the Justice of Peace, Alva Button.  Lots of their family lived in Tunbridge, which was just next door to Royalton,  Windsor, Vermont.  Julia Ann's mother, Asenath,  was a Durkee and there were lots in Tunbridge.

This reminds me of our grandfather, Frank Hugh Robinson b: 1871, who told us that his ancestors came over NOT on the Mayflower of 1620, but the ship after that.  That could have been a ship in the fleet that came in about 1640.  James would have been a good ancestor of that fleet living in Dorchester, Mass.

James and Mary b: 1647  married on September 27, 1664 in Dorchester.
Their grandson, James b: 1704 in Dorchester was a pioneer settler of Chester, Windsor, Vermont where he died.

Census information started in 1790, so anything earlier does not have that type of information.  Even at that, from 1790 to 1850, only the head of the house-most likely the men, were listed with a name.  Others were tally marks in columns.  There was written information that the county or town kept, and often it was very spotty.  That's what people have to depend on.  Then there are tax lists, etc, other things concerning deaths and inheritance.

The information came from my research on  ancestry.com.  I went from other trees who had established parents to keep on following until there were no more.  I also checked out any resources available for each person.

I have changed John Robinson, the connection to Sherie's tree.  I had picked John Robinson b: 1799 on Tunbridge.  She didn't know who her John was, only that the father was John Robinson.  I have been presuming Abiathar's father was the John Robinson on the 1850 census with the Tullers.

I haven't been this excited over my mother's family tree in a long time.  We've had this elusive ggrandfather Abiathar Smith Robinson b: 1829 NY or Vermont who seemed to have no father that we could establish with a paper trail and our Robinson line is a rare R1b Y haplogroup in that the DYS 393 allele is a 12, and not the usual 13, with most all DNA saying our connection was Irish and not English.  Grandpa's oral history, the memory of when he was 16 and had left home in a tizzy, was that his ancestors were from Wales.
                                                                       
Autosomal DNA tests after many years turned up a Sheri whose mother was a Robinson!  Wow!  It was like finding a needle in the haystack!  We had a match which included my brother, myself, my 2 children and my 1st male cousin Ken Robinson.  It consisted of a match on chromosome 1 and a big segment on chromosome 7.  I shared only 66.1cMs total with her on GedMatch.com going back 3.9 generations.  On #7 the segment was 52.2cMs. We all managed to have inherited this similar large segment of #7.   She had tested with Ancestry.  She had a secure tree whose family had come from Bakersfield, Franklin, Vermont.  Our ggrandfather's history was from Royalton and Tunbridge, Vermont.  Oh my!  However, we had no one from Bakersfield!

I had one fact.  Abiathar's wife, Royalton, Vermont born and raised, Julia Ann Tuller, was on the 1850 census in Royalton, Vermont.  Her family had a John Robinson, age 51, living with them as a farmhand.  That's when Abiathar seemed to be in the picture but not listed on their census.  He was nowhere to be found other than marrying Julia in 1852 next door in Tunbridge, Vermont.  Was it just a quirk?  Who can trace a John Robinson without a wife?  Impossible.  I could not trace him at all.
                                                             

Peter Bent Brigham founded Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston

I was not signed up again on Ancestry.com at this point and so decided to search and find what I could about this new town of Bakersfield.  I found a picture of a building there named for Peter Bent Brigham, and so I did a google search of his name, and then decided to search for this important man's genealogy.  "Peter Bent Brigham was born 4 September 1807 in Bakersfield, Vermont as the seventh of nine children born to Uriah Brigham (1757-1820) and Elizabeth (Fay) Brigham (1767-1837). Brigham was a direct descendant of Thomas Brigham (1603-1653), an early immigrant to Cambridge, Massachusetts  as well as John Bent (1596-1672) a founder of Sudbury, Massachusetts.  Brigham had little formal schooling and went to find work in Boston his early teens, when his father died. He began his career working on Middlesex Canal boats, selling fish and oysters in Boston.  He never married."

"Another Uriah on the tree: "In 1797, Uriah Brigham left Marlboro, Massachusetts, drove an ox team with a loaded wagon up the Connecticut River Valley, across the Green Mountains, following the Lamoille River, and north 11 miles to an area known as Knowlton's Gore. In the wagon with their belongings were his wife, Elizabeth Fay Brigham, and their four small children." (I had many Fays but not Elizabeth Fay.)

Abiathar Smith Robinson with his son, Frank Hugh Robinson and Julia Ann Tuller Frank was my grandfather. Somehow, I keep finding a Hiram that is a suitable man to be Abiathar Smith Robinson's father! So far, I have found 2 possibilities; Hiram Robinson of Jamaica, Windham, Vermont who died at age 39, and a Hiram Robinson of Stafford, Orange, Vermont who was very close to Tunbridge, Vermont, neighboring town  of Royalton, Windsor, Vermont, where wife Julia Ann Tuller lived..

I decided to look for THE CORRECT father of Abiathar Smith Robinson, my great grandfather, in cemeteries, so looked next door to Royalton, Vermont's Tunbridge, where Abiathar and Julia Ann Tuller got married.  There had to be a reason for that, and I know that the Durkees had a cemetery there named for them. Julia's mother was a Durkee. I used http://findagrave.com for my searches.

 We use familytreedna for our DNA testing called familyfinder.   I found: that my 1st cousin Robinson has 1525 matches on FTDNA and 140 of them are now marked as coming from his father's genealogy tree.  His father was my mother's brother.  Family tree shows that my cousin's ancestors were 0.1% of the population of England, 0.1% of the population of Scotland and 0.2% of the population of Ireland. Our DYS 393 allele is a 12 and not a 13, so we are rare Robinsons!  And Robinson is the 16th most popular surname, too.  In fact, on my tree which shows several possibities of fathers for Abiathar, I find I have 16 Hiram Robinsons!  It was a very popular name.

Originally, I thought a Hiram Robinson (1809-1839) married to Sally /Sarah Smith were his parents as they were from Jamaica, Windham County, Vermont and Sally had been a Smith.  Sally wound up in Wenona, Marshall, Illinois when she had remarried Thomas Russell in 1841 after Hiram had died.  My grandfather, Frank Hugh Robinson, was born in Wenona, Marshall, Illinois, being Abiathar moved there after returned from Canada after the Civil War, so there is this connection as well as SMITH.
 The distance between Jamaica and Royalton, Vermont is a N and S direction of 82.5 miles.

UPDATE: 6/4/17:  DNA test on male Robinson from this line shows that DYS 393 is a 13.  Ours is a 12.  This rules them out.  Also, their history shows that there was no son named Abiathar Smith Robinson.  This is the most conclusive part of information.
                       A Look At Another Hiram Robinson

Hiram Robinson (1806-1892) from Strafford, Orange, Vermont , is a man I once  thought  before that he was Abiathar's  father, because Tunbridge, where Abiathar and Julia Ann married, is also in Orange County and Strafford is close to Tunbridge.   Hiram  had been married to Zeruiah Tyler.

 Now Hiram and Zeruiah are biblical names.  Zeruiah /zəˈruːjə/ (‎צרויה, sometimes transliterated Tzruya or Zeruya) is a figure in the Hebrew Bible. She was a sister of King David. According to 1 Chronicles 2:13-16 and also the Babylonian Talmud (Shabbat 55), Zeruiah was a daughter of Jesse (sister to Abigail another of Jesse's daughters according to 2 Samuel 17:25). Zeruiah had three sons, Abishai, Joab, and Asahel, all of whom were soldiers in David's army (and also David's nephews). Hiram had been the king of Tyre and was friendly with king David.  Abiathar was the son of Abimelech, chief priest at Nob, took refuge with David who later appointed him high priest.  I thought it fitting for these two young parents to pick a biblical name.

Hiram and Zeruiah are buried in Stafford Cemetery, Orange County, Vermont, which is the same county that Tunbridge is in.  Hiram would have been 23 years old at Abiathar's birth, and Abiathar would have been their 1st child.  Zeruiah would have been 21 years old, perfect ages.  Hiram would have been 46 years old when Abiathar got married in Tunbridge, next door.  Zeruiah would have been 44 years old.
