Finding Father of Abiathar Smith Robinson-Two Different Hiram Robinsons to Choose From

Nadene Goldfoot,
daughter of Mildred Elizabeth Robinson,
granddaughter of Abiathar Smith Robinson

Abiathar Smith Robinson with his son, Frank Hugh Robinson
and Julia Ann Tuller
Frank was my grandfather.

Somehow, I keep finding a Hiram that is a suitable man to be Abiathar Smith Robinson's father! So far, I have found 2 possibilities; Hiram Robinson of Jamaica, Windham, Vermont who died at age 39, and a Hiram Robinson of Stafford, Orange, Vermont who was very close to Tunbridge, Vermont, neighboring town  of Royalton, Windsor, Vermont, where wife Julia Ann Tuller lived..

I decided to look for THE CORRECT father of Abiathar Smith Robinson, my great grandfather, in cemeteries, so looked next door to Royalton, Vermont's Tunbridge, where Abiathar and Julia Ann Tuller got married.  There had to be a reason for that, and I know that the Durkees had a cemetery there named for them. Julia's mother was a Durkee. I used http://findagrave.com for my searches.

We use familytreedna for our DNA testing called familyfinder.   I found: that my 1st cousin Robinson has 1525 matches on FTDNA and 140 of them are now marked as coming from his father's genealogy tree.  His father was my mother's brother.  Family tree shows that my cousin's ancestors were 0.1% of the population of England, 0.1% of the population of Scotland and 0.2% of the population of Ireland. Our DYS 393 allele is a 12 and not a 13, so we are rare Robinsons!  And Robinson is the 16th most popular surname, too.  In fact, on my tree which shows several possibities of fathers for Abiathar, I find I have 16 Hiram Robinsons!  It was a very popular name.

Originally, I thought a Hiram Robinson (1809-1839) married to Sally /Sarah Smith were his parents as they were from Jamaica, Windham County, Vermont and Sally had been a Smith.  Sally wound up in Wenona, Marshall, Illinois when she had remarried Thomas Russell in 1841 after Hiram had died.  My grandfather, Frank Hugh Robinson, was born in Wenona, Marshall, Illinois, being Abiathar moved there after returned from Canada after the Civil War, so there is this connection as well as SMITH.
The distance between Jamaica and Royalton, Vermont is a N and S direction of 82.5 miles.

A Look At Another Hiram Robinson

Hiram Robinson (1806-1892) from Strafford, Orange, Vermont , is a man I once  thought  before that he was Abiathar's  father, because Tunbridge, where Abiathar and Julia Ann married, is also in Orange County and Strafford is close to Tunbridge.   Hiram  had been married to Zeruiah Tyler.

Now Hiram and Zeruiah are biblical names.  Zeruiah /zəˈrjə/ (‎צרויה, sometimes transliterated Tzruya or Zeruya) is a figure in the Hebrew Bible. She was a sister of King David. According to 1 Chronicles 2:13-16 and also the Babylonian Talmud (Shabbat 55), Zeruiah was a daughter of Jesse (sister to Abigail another of Jesse's daughters according to 2 Samuel 17:25). Zeruiah had three sons, AbishaiJoab, and Asahel, all of whom were soldiers in David's army (and also David's nephews). Hiram had been the king of Tyre and was friendly with king David.  Abiathar was the son of Abimelech, chief priest at Nob, took refuge with David who later appointed him high priest.  I thought it fitting for these two young parents to pick a biblical name.

Hiram and Zeruiah are buried in Stafford Cemetery, Orange County, Vermont, which is the same county that Tunbridge is in.  Hiram would have been 23 years old at Abiathar's birth, and Abiathar would have been their 1st child.  Zeruiah would have been 21 years old, perfect ages.  Hiram would have been 46 years old when Abiathar got married in Tunbridge, next door.  Zeruiah would have been 44 years old.

Robinson Cemetery

From the US Post Office in Strafford village, go north on Brook Road for about 4-1/2 miles. The cemetery appears to be in the center of a large field. I'll need to get directions.

Strafford Cemetery

This cemetery is on the north end of Strafford village.

This line takes us back to: Descendants of George Robinson
1   George Robinson b: 1626 in Glasgow, Scotland or Yorkshire, England, Rehobeth, MA
.. +Joanna Ingraham b: Bet. 1629 - 1633 in Rehoboth, Bristol, Massachusetts

1. Hiram Robinson's father was:
   2. Daniel Jr b: 1769 in Rushville, New York.  Abiathar did say he was from New York before he ever showed Vermont.  Daniel is a common name found in the bible.
      3. Daniel Robinson was his father born in 1734 in Massachusetts.  It was Daniel who moved to Strafford, Orange, Vermont.  "11/11/14  Strafford, Orange, Vermont:   The town of Strafford was created on August 12, 1761 by way of a royal charter which King George III of England issued to Governor Benning Wentworth of New Hampshire. The town was named after the Earl of Strafford.
         4. Ebenezer Robinson was his father born in 1697 in Massachusetts
                  5. Samuel George Robinson was born in 1654 in Massachusetts
His father was 6. George Robinson born in Glasgow, Scotland or Yorkshire, England, Rehobeth, Massachusetts.

I didn't find any Smith connected to this Hiram Robinson of Strafford, VT.  However, sometimes people did name for someone they admired or knew.

This is interesting as the Y haplogroup of our Robinsons is R-L21 which is distinctive with a DYS 393 =12 and not the usual 13.  We match many Irish with this.

I hope my theory of religious first names and being right next door to Royalton, where Julia Ann Tuller was from is correct.  I didn't see anyone suitable to be Abiathar's father buried in this town.
Abiathar Smith Robinson and Julia Ann Tuller were married on February 29, 1952 11/11/14  in Tunbridge, Orange, Vermont by Justice of the Peace, Alva Button.
Julia's mother was Asenath Durkee, and there was  a Durkee Cemetery in North Tunbridge, Orange, Vermont with 61 interred there.  The Durkees have their own genealogical webpage and send out monthly updates in the form of a newsletter.  They're the line that makes Durkees mayonaise and spices.

Asenath is also a biblical name.  She was the daughter of Poti- phera, priest of On, wife of Joseph, and mother of Ephraim and Manasseh.  The name is Egyptian and apparently connected with the goddess Neith.

The distance between Strafford, Orange, Vermont to Tunbridge, Orange, Vermont is 7.8 miles.  "The town of Strafford was created on August 12, 1761 by way of a royal charter which King George III of England issued to Governor Benning Wentworth of New Hampshire. The town was named after the Earl of Strafford."  It's 930 feet high, and very cold today at  7 degrees F.  Tunbridge is at a lower elevation of 564 feet but at the same temperature today of 7 degrees F.  "The town of Tunbridge was created on September 3, 1761, by way of a royal charter which King George III of England issued to Governor Benning Wentworth of New Hampshire."

Tunbridge's population:
So when Abiathar and Julia Ann got married in 1852 in Tunbridge, there were almost 2,000 people living here, but the very next year was the population starting to drop off.  People were leaving.   From 1861 to 1865, the Civil War between the North and the South raged.

I have found one person who matches our testee, my 1st cousin, son of my mother's brother on the 67 allele DNA test.  James Robinson's tree ends up with another person.  Descendants of JOHN Robynsone ROBINSON, Sr.
1   [1] JOHN Robynsone ROBINSON, Sr. b: February 09, 1611/12 in Meppershall, Bedfordshire, England

I was able, with the assistance of other trees on ancestry.com, go back further to:
Descendants of Robert Robinson
1   Robert Robinson b: 1465 in Redriff, Surrey, England with this other match from a James Robinson.   It still could be that this is where our tree is, also.  His family had gone to Maine instead of Vermont.

I'm getting forgetful.  I wrote this one in 2014, thinking the same thoughts.  Interesting to see what I wrote then.
