Holly Waterman, My Very Helpful Cousin-Researcher From Dartmouth University

Holly Kay Waterman was the most helpful researcher of Robinson for me. She was a cousin who was the librarian at Dartmouth. University in Hanover, New Hampshire. She drove to Vermont on occasion looking in state records for our ancestors.
Holly was born in 1956, slightly younger than my own two children. She died of cancer sometime after 2014.
Holly's mother was Irma Alice Tullar who is on our Tuller/ar trees. She was born Oct 16, 1926 in Cornith Center, Orange, Vermont. Tunbridge is also in Orange, Vermont and next door to Royalton, Windham, Vermont. Irma's father was Charles Earnest Tullar b: 1888 in Vershire, Orange, Vermont. His father was George Albert Tullar b: 1857 also in Vershire, but died in Cornith, Vermont. His father was Rogers Harrison Tullar b;1919 St. Albans, Bay, and finally, his father was a Samuel Tuller/Tullar b: 1786 of St Albans, Franklin, Vermont. That must be where the separation of the Tullers came to be. The story I heard was that there was a disagreement and one line became er and the other ar. Only DNA can tell us a story about it and no one has reached this time or taken the test. His father was Reuben Tuller/ar b; 1751 in Simsbury, Hartford, Connecticut, and his father was James Tuller/ar b: 1713 of either Bedford County, England or already in Simsbury, CT.
William Tuller, b: 1687 was in Simsbury as well for birth and death. So was his father, John Tulloe Tuller b: 1642-1659 in Simsbury, CT. Lastly, William Tuller was born in Holland (Nederlands) in came over in 1620--on one of the ships after Mayflower maybe in the fleet in 1630 and arrived in New York.
Confusion of "Teller" and "Tuller"
Some Internet sources identify "William Tuller" (apparently referring to this man) and Margaret Donaldson (apparently referring to Margaret Duncanson) as the parents of John Tuller of Simsbury, Connecticut (born about 1652). There is no basis for this association. John Tuller's origins are unknown; Donald Lines Jacobus identified John Tuller as "of unknown antecedents."

Study of Robinson Families of Vermont on 1850 Census: Where They Lived in Vermont

Abiathar Smith Robinson married Julia Ann Tuller (Fuller) of Royalton. Next door was Tunbridge, Orange, Vermont where they married on February 29, 1852, Leap Year. Julia's father was Tuller and mother was Durkee, most all living in the two places with Durkee in Tunbridge. Durkees won out for wedding to take place in Tunbridge. The problem is to see if I can find who Abiathar's father is as it is not on any hard copy of the normal resources like census records. It looks obvious that it must be a John Robinson (a very common name) who was on the 1850 census living with the Tullers, and Julia Ann Tuller was a child of 15 then. She married at 17 to Abiathar.
John Robinson was born 1803 in Tunbridge, Orange, Vermont
He was found at age 51? on the 1850 census of Royalton, Windsor, VT as a farmer living with the Tullers. Why?
By 1852, Abiathar and Julia Ann Tuller were married in Tunbridge. Also living in Tunbridge was:
1. Charles Kent. Robinson b: 19 April 1829 b: Strafford, Vermont. Charles was on 25 July 1870 census in Tunbridge at age 41 with father, James 70, sister-Mary A 44, James T 39. I've got the possible idea that Charles is the son of James Robinson who died in 1878 in Tunbridge. Abiather could have been his brother but they were both born in 1829 but in different months. This is part of the tree I have leading to Meppershall, England that connects to our Maine Robinson DNA cousin.
2. On 1850 census of Tunbridge was listed: James at 49, Mary 47, Mary Anne 24, Martha T 22, Charles K 21, Alma 15 b: Nov 1833, now Noyes-66 yrs old in 1900 listed as servant.
3. In 1900 Charles K was listed as 71 and single. He was also on the Civil War Draft enlisted on 1 July 1853 at age 34.
4. 1870 census of 24th of June listed John A b: 1827, was 43 years old in Tunbridge; also: Mary D 37, Frank C 14, John M 12, and Harris Orr. I've got Orr's on tree.
5. A Robinson was born 19 April 1829 and died 6 Dec 1907 at Hunt Cemetery in Tunbridge. I have Abiathar dying in 1904 in Illinois. These could all be relatives.

Well, now I'm stuck. I believe Abiathar's father could be this John Robinson who might be the one who was living with the Tullers on the 1850 census. I have no idea which Robinson line this might belong to. I don't know who John Robinson's father could be. Back to the drawing board.

Robinson Discovery of Irish Connection Bearing R-A1487 Y Haplogroup and the Normans

My mother was Mildred Elizabeth Robinson and her father was Frank Hugh Robinson whose father was Abiathar Smith Robinson born in Vermont. I had my 1st cousin, Kenneth Robinson, tested with FTDNA for both the family finder and for his Y haplogroup.
He was found to be R1b1a2a1a1b4 originally and that has now become expanded into the big Y test from R-L21 to R-A1487. It was at the R-L21 stage that the Fitzpatrick group noticed his results and found that many many Fitzpatricks of Ireland matched his haplogroup and were also R-A1487s. They were so interested that they paid for my cousin's further test in the Big Y.
Sure enough, he belonged to their group, but with the name of Robinson! He was the only one. My grandfather, Frank, had told us all that he had run away from home as a boy because of an overly zealous father who wouldn't allow him to move his horse out of the field on a Sunday when a bull had managed to enter, threatening the horse. The horse was killed and my grandfather left, never to return. At age 16, he had left with a smattering of knowledge about his family.
He remembered that his family came from Wales. Information compiled in FTDNA show England and Ireland. They came over not on the MAYFLOWER of 1620 but the ship after that. The Robinson line shows that a John Robinson was the one who sent the Pilgrims of Holland on the Mayflower, though John stayed with his flock in Holland. It was his son, Isaac, who took the next ship over to America. According to my genealogy, that group of Robinsons had no record of having an Abiathar Smith Robinson in their line. They didn't seem to be in the right places to be a part of our family. However, none of them who were a part of the Robinson group online had done any DNA testing! Finding his origins seemed like an impossibility. The last place I thought of was Ireland or even Wales. He must have just been part of Robin Hood's family, whoever they were.
Robin Hood was a member of the Saxon nobility called Robin of Loxley. He fought at the crusades. On his return to England his lands had been taken by the Normans. ... Robin Hood the legend of Sherwood - He hides from the Normans as an outlaw in Sherwood Forest wearing clothes of Lincoln green.
The Normans had a profound effect on Irish culture and history after their invasion at Bannow Bay in 1169. Initially, the Normans maintained a distinct culture and ethnicity. Yet, with time, they came to be subsumed into Irish culture to the point that it has been said that they became "more Irish than the Irish themselves". The Normans settled mostly in an area in the east of Ireland, later known as the Pale, and also built many fine castles and settlements, including Trim Castle and Dublin Castle. Both cultures intermixed, borrowing from each other's language, culture and outlook. Norman descendants today can be recognised by their surnames. Names such as French, (De) Roche, Devereux, D'Arcy, Treacy and Lacy are particularly common in the southeast of Ireland, especially in the southern part of County Wexford, where the first Norman settlements were established. Other Norman names, such as Furlong, predominate there. Another common Norman-Irish name was Morell (Murrell), derived from the French Norman name Morel.
. Names beginning with Fitz (from the Norman for son) usually indicate Norman ancestry. Except for the native surname Fitzpatrick, a gallicisation of Mac Giolla Phádraig/Ó Maol Phádraig. Hiberno-Norman surnames with the prefix - 'fitz' include Fitzgerald, FitzGibbons (Gibbons) dynasty, Fitzmaurice. Families bearing such surnames as Barry (de Barra) and De Búrca (Burke) are also of Norman extraction. Well, this one Robinson is connected to the Fitzpatrick line! It also looks like we are connected to the Vikings this way, too.

Interestingly, Mary Therese Winifred Robinson is an Irish Independent politician who served as the seventh President of Ireland from December 1990 to September 1997, becoming the first woman to hold this office. This is her husband's surname as she was a Bourke from county Mayo.

They are an ethnic group that arose from contact between Norse Viking settlers of a region in France, named Normandy after them, and indigenous Franks and Gallo-Romans. The Normans’ best-known achievement was their conquest of England. In 1066, William, the Duke of Normandy, disputed the claim of the new English king, Harold Godwinson. Soon after landing in England, William and his knights met Harold’s army near the town of Hastings. The Anglo Norman invasion of Ireland took place in stages during the late 12th century and led to the Anglo-Normans Kingdom of England conquering large swaths of land from the Irish. At the time, Gaelic Ireland was made up of several kingdoms, with a High King claiming lordship over the lesser kings.

Your shared ancestry with the A1488 Fitzpatricks is from around 900 AD. The historical narratives of the Fitzpatricks you match have them being in Ireland since ancient times, but DNA indicates there is simply no evidence of that.
If the common ancestor was from Ireland you might expect to see other Irish matches from 900 AD and earlier other than Fitzpatricks. But you don't, which makes the idea an Irish man went to England and Wales not that convincing. What is convincing are the other English and Welsh (and Cambro-Norman) matches you have from from ca. 1300 AD and earlier.
And while the Vikings were in Ireland ca. 900 AD and earlier and did take Irish as slaves, there is no evidence of you or the A1488 Fitzpatricks having matches with Scandinavian surnames, nor is there any occurrence of your haplotypes (e.g., A1487, A1499 etc) being found in Scandinavian men. The Viking theory is a nice idea, but there's little to no DNA evidence for it. That doesn't mean there couldn't be in the future, however.
By far the simplest interpretation of your data, and your surname (son of Robert, Robert being introduced to Britain by Normans) for that matter, is that you are Norman in origin. That is supported by your DNA matches to D'Altons and FitzGeralds (some of the Brannan matches also trace to Wales, not Ireland). One FitzGerald match is even an ancestor from ca. 900-1000 AD, i.e, before Normans landed in Ireland. The FitzGeralds and their associates (who also took the FitzGerald name at times) were Cambro-Normans.

Interestingly, Mary Therese Winifred Robinson is an Irish Independent politician who served as the seventh President of Ireland from December 1990 to September 1997, becoming the first woman to hold this office. This is her husband's surname as she was a Bourke from county Mayo.

Rockingham New Hampshire Robinsons: and Teres Fair's Babcock Connection to THE ROBINSON LINE

We are blessed with my mother's maiden name of Robinson, the 16th most popular surname in the United States. Our ggrandfather was Abiathar Smith Robinson b: 1829 in Vermont. His wife was Julia Ann Tuller b: 1834 in Royalton, Windsor, Vermont. They married in Tunbridge, Orange, Vermont right next door to Royalton in 1852. Abiathar was not on any census in Vermont in 1850, but Julia Ann and her parents were. They've been easy to trace. Not Abiathar. Not until DNA testing started opening some doors.
I should explain that I have been hunting Robinsons for years and years. I've had about a dozen conclusions about finding the right Robinson. Every Robinson in New England is in my Family Tree Maker software program. I have found so many interesting possibilities that I'd be proud to have each and every one for my ancestors.
On To Tonight's Search.
First, I've found 3 ladies who match my male 1st cousin, Ken Robinson, my brother and myself. They all have Robinson on their tree. Then I found 3 men with Ken's Y haplogroup, R-L21, a rather rare R halplogroup. They all used the same tree leading through Rockingham, New Hampshire and onto Meppershall, England.
That's fine as our oral history from Grandfather Frank Hugh Robinson b: 1871 in Wenona, Marshall, Illinois was that their people came over not on the Mayflower but the ship after that. Well, who were his people? Robinsons? I didn't find any from Pastor John Robinson, who sent the Pilgrims on the Mayflower from Holland that matched our R-L21 haplogroup though there were Rs. I don't think they've tested.
I needed a way to join onto the Rockingham Robinson tree, whose main creator was in Maine, a neighbor of Vermont. Finally, my last decision was in looking into Tunbridge and finding a suitable father for Abiathar, sort of. Tunbridge was full of Robinsons, Tullers and Durkees. Julia's mother was a Durkee. I played around with him and dicovered that he of all people, connected to the Rockingham Robinson tree!
One of my lady matches just told me to go back into Gedmatchcom and compare Ken with all the R-L21 men. This includes the old title of R1b1a2a1a1b4. Some people who entered there were using that title a few years ago.
I found 3 men. One had an interesting surname and I checked it in my name bank. I hit gold!

The conundrum in all this is that my 3 matching ladies fit into the Rev. John Robinson who is married to Bridget White, who sent the Pilgrims on the Mayflower in 1620. It's a large and well-known tree.

My two ladies that match as us as 3rd cousins come out on the Pastor John Robinson of the Pilgrims Tree.
Yet, it's all much guesswork. Now I should go back and recheck references if possible.
March 3, 2018; I found another match to my brother's and my name but not to my Robinson cousin. It is Leno. He has Durkee and Robinson in his name bank. His Durkee turns out to be our 2nd great grandmother, Julia Ann Robinson's mother's mother. We are 5th cousins.

This led me this on his tree, and I already had Asa Robinson on my tree with the same father of Peter.
This turned out on my tree to lead to the same Robinson line I had concluded was the right one, that led to Meppershall, England with a John Robinson.
Then the Durkee lead led me to this, that we also shared. It turns out that it is not the same Robinson line my other DNA ladies are on. That one seems to lead to the John Robinson who sent Pilgrims on the Mayflower. Our Robinsons connected at one point.

Another set of parents that are more than plausible for Abiathar that would keep him on this same tree
of his Ydna matches is Hiram Robinson and Almira Morgan, daughter of the designer of the Morgan
Horse. Since James Robinson takes me to the same place that Hiram Robinson does, I'll stick with
James as the father. I've just discovered another match to my Robinson/Durkee family being Morgan
genes. This way my other 3rd cousin matches that have found their place on the tree are fine.
This does explain more to me about Abiather and his father's fight over Abiathar's horse being killed
in the field by the bull causing Abiathar to run away from home and never return. It might have been
a Morgan horse.

My two ladies that match as us as 3rd cousins come out on the Pastor John Robinson of the Pilgrims Tree.
Yet, it's all much guesswork. Now I should go back and recheck references if possible.
March 3, 2018; I found another match to my brother's and my name but not to my Robinson cousin. It is Leno. He has Durkee and Robinson in his name bank. His Durkee turns out to be our 2nd great grandmother, Julia Ann Robinson's mother's mother. We are 5th cousins.

This led me this on his tree, and I already had Asa Robinson on my tree with the same father of Peter.
This turned out on my tree to lead to the same Robinson line I had concluded was the right one, that led to Meppershall, England with a John Robinson.
Then the Durkee lead led me to this, that we also shared. It turns out that it is not the same Robinson line my other DNA ladies are on. That one seems to lead to the John Robinson who sent Pilgrims on the Mayflower. Our Robinsons connected at one point.

Another set of parents that are more than plausible for Abiathar that would keep him on this same tree
of his Ydna matches is Hiram Robinson and Almira Morgan, daughter of the designer of the Morgan
Horse. Since James Robinson takes me to the same place that Hiram Robinson does, I'll stick with
James as the father. I've just discovered another match to my Robinson/Durkee family being Morgan
genes. This way my other 3rd cousin matches that have found their place on the tree are fine.
This does explain more to me about Abiather and his father's fight over Abiathar's horse being killed
in the field by the bull causing Abiathar to run away from home and never return. It might have been
a Morgan horse.
