New York is a possible birth place since Abiathar slipped and said he was born there in the 1900 census. Then he died in 1904. Dementia? Family forgetting where? Vermont and New York are connected by history.

There have been two John Robinsons I have considered who was the 51 year old man living with Alonzo Tuller's family that included Julia Ann Tuller age 15 who married our Abiathar Smith Robinson in Tunbridge, Orange, Vermont in 1852. He was given the age of 51 on the 1850 census and was the farmer in this family group in Royalton, Vermont while Alonzo was noted as a stone worker. The census never identified the relationship. That would mean John was born in 1799 in Vermont. He could be Abiathar Smith Robinson's father. Why he, a farmer, is living with Alonzo Tuller, a stone mason, but later, a farmer, is unknown, but he's there in 1850.
By February 29, 1852, Abiathar Smith Robinson is marrying Alonzo Tuller's daughter, Julia Ann in Tunbridge, Orange, Vermont, which is right next door to Royalton, Windsor, Vermont.
I found Abiathar and Julia on 1870 census in Wenona, Illinois, born in Vermont and next door to Albert Tuller, brother of Julia. They were also in Wenona, Illinois in 1880. On the 1900 census, Abiathar said he was born in New York. Abiathar died in Wenona in 1904. Whoever was speaking to the census-taker didn't know; maybe one of the children. Abiathar died 4 years later, so he may not have been well.
Interesting is that my grandfather named my uncle Edward Kenneth Robinson. Did he know of this history or was it just his inclination to do so?
On the other hand, looking at the family buried in Tunbridge in the Hunt Cemetery finds many of one family of James Robinson with wife, Mary Bicknell.

Over 13 Durkees, so many in Hunt Cemetery..a few in another. Julia Ann Robinson nee Tuller's mother, Asenath was a Durkee. No wonder they married in Tunbridge.
So often I want to shout; "Will the real father of Abiathar please stand up?" Has the line ended with us? We need other Robinsons DNA tested. That's all I can say. We're looking for a Y haplogroup of R-L21 or upgraded to R-FT 111213.

Well, now I'm stuck. I believe Abiathar's father could be this John Robinson who might be the one who was living with the Tullers on the 1850 census. I have no idea which Robinson line this might belong to. I don't know who John Robinson's father could be. Back to the drawing board.

The Indian Raid on Royalton, Windsor, Vermont With Bigger Implications From British Rule-and Our Ancestors, the Rix and Durkee Families

I had read about the burning of Royalton from the Durkee family newsletter from the Spring of 1993 of which Bernice B. Gunderson was the editor and family researcher for the President, Robin K. Durkee. It was exciting to find we also had Durkee lines running through our veins with all that DNA, so its history was even more impressive. Now I'm finding reference to this in another form. https://www.ourherald.com/articles/royalton-raid-revisited. The burning of this town was most distressful as they were the very 1st settlers of the town that was started in 1779. There was the settlement before being chartered and the town was thriving. They had large stocks of cattle. They were attacked on October 16, 1780.
My interest today lies in the fact that Abiathar and Julia Ann, married in 1852 in Tunbridge, Orange, Vermont which is next door to Royalton, Windsor, Vermont, moved to Canada and were there for I don't now how long until after the Civil War when I found them in Wenona, Marshall, Illinois. My question was why would anyone move there?
Canada was luring loyalists to Canada with the promise of free land. They evidently had reason to think they could apply and get land. I have no solid proof of who Abiathar's parents were or who they were connected with. I've been making a lot of educated guesses because Vermont, in fact all of New England was bursting with Robinsons, the 16th most popular surname eventually in the USA.
The well-known heroine of the day is a young mother, Hannah Handy or Hendee, who has escaped capture but who crosses the White River to confront Lt. Houghton, to demand the return of her son. Hendee’s spunk earns her the admiration of the Mohawks, who eventually agree to hand over her son and several other children.
The Indians killed Pember and Button and took as prisoners, Joseph Kneeland, Havens, Mesers, Simeon Belknap, Giles Gibbs and Jonathan Brown with Joeph Kneeland and his aged father, Elias Curtis, John Kent and Peter Mason. They plundered every house they found. They came upon General Elias Stevens working with his oxen. He rode home halfway and saw Captain Joseph Parkhurst who told him that the Indians were by river already, so they both rode down river. when they came to the home of Deacon Daniel Rix where they rescued his wife and 3 of their children with the Deacon. Again Stevens ran into Indians and veered, coming to his father in law's home, tilly Parkhurst. General Stevens tried to get people into the woods, out of sight of the Indians. Many, driven by fear, wound up in Sharon, Vermont and at Captain E. Parkhurst's home. (I have Pember on our tree.)
The Indians had gone to the home of Deacon Daniel Rix. They took Gardner Rix, his son, a boy about 14 years old which his mother witnessed. They left another house and went up the river as far as Mr. Timothy Durkee's home where they took 2 of his boys prisoners; Adan and Andrew, and carried the former to Canada, who died there in prison. Adan Durkee died in camp at Montreal. The family of Timothy Durkee suffered through the burning of Royalton. Only the eldest son, Heman, remained in Royalton after this attack. Several had moved to New York, with the grandchildren spreading out to Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Texas, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Odelltown, Canada, and Iowa.
Meanwhile, a militia of some 300 armed settlers has been mustered and comes upon Lt. Houghton and his party at about 2 a.m. For Zadock Steele and other captives, these trials are only the beginning of two years of hardship. Held first at an Indian village in Canada, Steele and others are eventually sold to the British. For most of the next two years, he is held in a maximum-security prison on an island in the middle of the St. Lawrence River, under conditions of extreme privation.
In August of 1782, Steele and several other prisoners stage a daring escape, which involves digging a 20-foot tunnel, and then swimming through the dangerous rapids surrounding the island. The escapees have no way of knowing the Revolutionary War is over, and all prisoners are about to be released.
Abiathar and Julia Ann named their 1st son, born in November 1852, Edward RIX Robinson. I guess they knew about the Indian raid, alright. Deacon Daniel Rix is my 5th great grandfather from Julia's side. We have a whole slew of Rix ancestors. Julia Ann Tuller's mother was Asenith Durkee, born 1814 Timothy Durkee, born May 18, 1776 was Asenith's 2nd cousin twice removed.

Goodbye to Grandparents
Garner was born on July 31, 1767 in Preston, New London, Connecticut. Garner Rix grew up on the farm near his grandparents, aunts, uncles and lots of cousins. He was the oldest son of Daniel and Rebecca (Johnson) Rix. When Garner was about 12 years old his family packed up their things and moved up the Connecticut River to their new home in Royalton, Vermont. That year his older sister, Susanna, was 14. She probably was a great help to their mother in caring for the younger children: Joseph 9, Rebecca 7, Daniel 4, and Little Elisha just 2 years old. In this, the spring of 1779, their mother, Rebecca, 37, was pregnant with Jerusha.
Garner Rix was 13 years old at the time of the Royalton Raid. He was captured by the Indians in the last raid of the American Revolution. He was taken to Montreal, sold to a French Woman who kept him safe for a year until it was safe for him to walk home, by himself at age 14. Counties in Vermont: Where Was Abiathar Smith Robinson Born? Windham? Bennington?

| Vermont, a very small state, is only 9,623 square miles in size. Oregon happens to be 96,003 square miles in size. Frank Hugh Robinson, his son and my grandfather, moved to Oregon from Wenona, Marshall, Illinois where Frank was born. |
There are no records of him other than at the Wenona, Illinois Cemetery and my grandparents' huge Bible with records in the front pages. His wife, Julia Ann Tuller, was easily found in the October 28,1850 census living in Royalton, Windsor, Vermont with her parents at the age of 15. Abiathar was not. They married on February 29, 1852, leap year in Tunbridge, Orange, Vermont which was next door. Lots of Robinsons lived there, I noticed, and the same in Royalton. In fact, Vermont was just loaded with Robinsons of which all could have been great parents of Abiathar.
One potential father I like a lot is Descendants of HIRAM ROBINSON, Jr.

SL and CL match me with 24.81cMs and CC matches us with 34.44cMs. Sl and CL also match me on #7 with 48.90cMs. CC matches me on #14 with 5.68cMs and on the 23rd chromosome (X) the sex gene, telling me we share a female ancestor with a segment of 5.27cMs.
With Robinson being the 16th most popular name, it's not surprising that a Robinson would marry into another Robinson family.

It's interesting that Windsor is really next door to Orange. Lots of Robinsons came from Bennington and Windham, neighbors. Windham and Windsor are also neighbors.
Windham had over 20 pages with 20 people on each page making 400 Robinsons at the LDS FamilySearch.
Bennington has over 400 as well.
Windsor also had over 400 Robinsons.
Royalton, Windsor had 41 listed with both city and county. Many of those were children of Amos Robinson, of which there were two Amos with wives of Betsey and Lavina.
Orange had over 600. I kept going and the names kept coming. It's probably true for the others as well.
Rutland had at least 400 Robinsons.
Franklin had 360 Robinsons.

Tunbridge and Royalton, Vermont Beginnings:
Royalton, Orange, Vermont is the site on the 1850 census showing that my ggrandmother, Julia Ann Tuller, lived here at the age of 15. She married Abiathar Smith Robinson next door in Tunbridge, Vermont in 1852 in February, a leap year.
When did these towns start and how long had Abiathar's family been in Vermont?
A bit of interesting history: Royalton was originally chartered (also known as patented) on November 23, 1769, by King George III through the Royal Lieutenant Governor of New York. This Royal New York Charter granted 30,000 acres of unclaimed land to 30 Partitioners who had the land surveyed three years prior to the charter. The New York Charter included restrictions: all mines of silver and gold were to remain the property of the King and all large pine trees fit for ship masts were reserved for the Royal Navy. They suffered from a large Indian attack in 1780.

1830 had no Robinsons in Royalton. They had all moved out into other towns of Windsor County. The family of Timothy Durkee suffered through the burning of Royalton on October 16, 1780, 50 years ago. It was when Royalton was surprised by an attack of 300 Indians of many tribes. The leaders were from the Caghnewaga tribe from Canada with intentions of destroying the town of Newbury in eastern Vermont on the Connecticut River.
Only Timothy's oldest son, Heman, remained in Royalton. Harvey remained in Vermont. Several moved to New York. Timothy's grandchildren spread out far and wide to Pennsylvania, New York, Winsconsin, Texas, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Iowa, and Odelltown, Canada. Some even stayed in Vermont.

Looking at John in the 1840 Wethersfield census, he was from age 30-40, so in 1850 he would have been from 40-50. A John Robinson was 51 in Royalton on the 1850 census in the Tuller household. In 1840 the Wetherfield John had a son under 5, one from 5-10 and one from 10-15. By the 1850 census he would have been from 20-30. This fits Abiathar who was 21. Hmmm! John had a lot of females in his home in 1840; a daughter under 5, one fro 15-20, 30-40, 40-50, and 70-80. He or his wife may have had female siblings living with them and of course the grandmother. Information has been found. This must be his father. His mother is Elizabeth Haskell. This line takes me directly to Reverend John Robinson who went the Pilgrims over on the Mayflower to America. It's can't be! Our Y haplogroup is R-L21. Anyone else in this group have this? I went by a finished tree already on FamilySearch.

Tunbridge, Orange, Vermont This is where Abiathar Smith Robinson seemed to be living in when he married in February 1852. It's a town next door to Royalton.
Tunbridge is a town in Orange County, Vermont, United States. Established in 1761, Tunbridge has three villages and five covered bridges that follow the First Branch of the White River and Vermont Route 110.
"Tunbridge was granted by Benning Wentworth of New Hampshire in 1761. The town was named fNaor the Viscount of Tunbridge who lived back in England. The first settlers in town were Moses and Susannah Ordway. They were the parents of 22 children, eighteen of whom lived to adulthood. In October of 1780, during the Revolution, a British led military force of some three hundred Mohawks from Canada, attacked Tunbridge. Four men were killed and some thirty males were taken prisoner. It was not until the end of the Revolution that the town was safe enough for settlement. This must be the same attack as Royalton experienced.

As of the 2017 Census the town population was 1,171 . The town consists of three village centers, all situated on Vermont Route 110 in the valley of the first branch of the White River. The three settlements are named North Tunbridge (also known locally as "Blood Village"), Tunbridge Village ("Market") and South Tunbridge ("Jigger").
Because Vermont abounded with Robinsons, Abiathar could have been a son of anyone of them. It's like trying to find a needle in a haystack in finding his father who has not been on any census with him. A John Robinson was living with his wife's Tuller family in Royalton in 1850, the 1st census with women's names as well. He was said to be born in 1799.
