Holly Waterman, My Very Helpful Cousin-Researcher From Dartmouth University

Holly Kay Waterman was the most helpful researcher of Robinson for me. She was a cousin who was the librarian at Dartmouth. University in Hanover, New Hampshire. She drove to Vermont on occasion looking in state records for our ancestors.
Holly was born in 1956, slightly younger than my own two children. She died of cancer sometime after 2014.
Holly's mother was Irma Alice Tullar who is on our Tuller/ar trees. She was born Oct 16, 1926 in Cornith Center, Orange, Vermont. Tunbridge is also in Orange, Vermont and next door to Royalton, Windham, Vermont. Irma's father was Charles Earnest Tullar b: 1888 in Vershire, Orange, Vermont. His father was George Albert Tullar b: 1857 also in Vershire, but died in Cornith, Vermont. His father was Rogers Harrison Tullar b;1919 St. Albans, Bay, and finally, his father was a Samuel Tuller/Tullar b: 1786 of St Albans, Franklin, Vermont. That must be where the separation of the Tullers came to be. The story I heard was that there was a disagreement and one line became er and the other ar. Only DNA can tell us a story about it and no one has reached this time or taken the test. His father was Reuben Tuller/ar b; 1751 in Simsbury, Hartford, Connecticut, and his father was James Tuller/ar b: 1713 of either Bedford County, England or already in Simsbury, CT.
William Tuller, b: 1687 was in Simsbury as well for birth and death. So was his father, John Tulloe Tuller b: 1642-1659 in Simsbury, CT. Lastly, William Tuller was born in Holland (Nederlands) in came over in 1620--on one of the ships after Mayflower maybe in the fleet in 1630 and arrived in New York.
Confusion of "Teller" and "Tuller"
Some Internet sources identify "William Tuller" (apparently referring to this man) and Margaret Donaldson (apparently referring to Margaret Duncanson) as the parents of John Tuller of Simsbury, Connecticut (born about 1652). There is no basis for this association. John Tuller's origins are unknown; Donald Lines Jacobus identified John Tuller as "of unknown antecedents."

Our 1852 Wedding in Tunbridge, Vermont

Abiathar Smith Robinson entered Julia Ann Tuller's life probably by 1850 when I found her on the October 28, 1850 census at age 15 living with her parents. Another farmer was living with the family; a John Robinson, born in 1799 at age 51. Before he was born, an Indian raid on Royalton had occurred on October 16, 1780 and people were killed and even kidnapped. The next thing I knew was that Julia married Abiathar in Tunbridge, Orange, Vermont on February 29, 1852, a Sunday. . She was born on December 18, 1834 in Royalton, Windsor, Vermont, the larger town next door only 8 miles away, so married at age 17 years 2 months 11 days on a Sunday.
Abiathar was also born in December but in 1829, so he was 5 years older than Julia, probably 22 at the time of their marriage. I don't know the day of his birth or even where exactly he was born or have any records of who his parents were. If it was this John living with the Tullers, he wasn't on the 1850 census. Perhaps they had no room. Perhaps he came from Tunbridge or even further.There were a lot of Robinsons in New England.
Julia had a lot of relatives. From Stowe, Vermont to Royalton, Vermont was only 56 miles. Her mother was Asenath Durkee which later was a family making all sorts of kitchen needed foods such as spices.. She was born in 1814 in Royalton, that town that experienced an Indian raid in its early days. She had married Alonzo Charles Tuller of St Albans, Franklin, Vermont. Asenath's mother, Julia's grandmother, was Rebecca Hatch b: 1791 in Sharon, Windsor, Vermont. She was married to Heman Durkee, Jr. of Royalton, Windsor, Vermont in 1813 in Royalton so had moved there from Sharon, Vermont. Heman had lived in Royalton all his life. "
Amos Robinson, age 19 from Vermont was at the bottom of the census page, a few farms away. He is probably one of our Robinsons, born 1831.." Amos, son of Joseph Allen Bullard Robinson, both had been born in Royalton. Amos died as a Civil War soldier later in Mississippi fighting from 1861-65. Joseph Allen Bullard Robinson's father was from Lebanon, Connecticut but had moved on to Royalton, Vermont. He had also moved much later to Decatur, Illinois. Abiathar had also moved from Vermont to Wenona, Marshall, Illinois where he and Julia are buried.
I just now noticed that Hiram Robinson, one of Amos Robinson and his wife, Lavina Bullock's sons, was born in 1799, but he is not a John. He is Hiram Robinson. At one time I thought Hiram could have been Abiathar's father, being so many Robinsons were from Royalton. It's still possible. I don't know if the live-in farmer John was Abiathar's father. Hiram was married to Almira Morgan of the Morgan line of horses. Abiathar raised horses with Julia. My grandfather, Frank, left home at 16 because of Abiathar's strict religious rules about working on the Sabbath and wouldn't let him lead his horse out of the field where he was due to meet up with a bull who had entered somehow. It could be that the horse was killed-thus forcing Frank to leave home. He had loved that horse.
Hiram had moved to Sandy Creek, Oswego,New York In 1850, " they had 2,456 people; 1.5% of the population of New York. Evidently they were on the border of Lake Ontario. "The west border of Sandy Creek is Lake Ontario and the north border is Jefferson County. He drowned later, evidently in Lake Ontario before the 1860 census came out. Almira died in 1888 there in Sandy Creek.
That could be why Abiathar had said in one census that he was from New York; and on others from Vermont. Then again, the 2 states are next door to each other, Vermont once being part of New York!
Many people of Robinson, Durkee and Tuller lived in Tunbridge so they must have had a large group at the wedding. I've now selected John Robinson b: 1784 of Westminster, Windham, Vermont to have been Abiathar's father, though he wouldn't be the one living with the Tullers. His wife was Sophronia Pember of Randolph, Orange, Vermont. They both died in Stowe, Lamoille, Vermont.
Nine months later in November 1852 their first son, Edward Rix Robinson was born.
Interestingly, John's father was Zadock Robinson who was in the army in Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada. when he died in 1814. He was in the USA army in the War of 1812. "Zadok, meaning "Righteous" "Justified", was a Kohen, biblically recorded to be a descendant from Eleazar the son of Aaron . He was the high priest during the reigns of David and Solomon."
Abiathar's name is also biblical, which might matter in this particular sect and time period as to how they would choose names for babies. Abiathar (Hebrew: אֶבְיָתָר ’Eḇyāṯār, "the father is great"), in the Hebrew Bible, is a son of Ahimelech or Ahijah, High Priest at Nob, the fourth in descent from Eli (1 Samuel 23:6) and the last of Eli's House to be a High Priest.
Today, we can see that a cohen from Aaron bears the Y haplogroup of J1, so can actually be identified through DNA. If Zadock is the real ancestor of my grandfather, Frank Hugh Robinson, son of Abiathar, he would bear the haplogroup of R-L21. In case some of you Robinsons were tested a while back, it first read with minimum testing as R1b; then as R1b1a2a1a1b4; Frank's oral history to us was that his ancestor came over NOT on the Mayflower but the ship after that one. All I know is that John Robinson, Pastor in Holland, sent the Pilgrims on the Mayflower but didn't go himself. Instead he sent his son, Isaac over on the next ship. He had to stay with his remaining flock. All our clues lead to having Scottish ancestors.

Who Else Moved to Canada From Vermont with the Abiathar Smith Robinsons?

Abiathar and Julia Ann Robinson went to Canada from Royalton and Tunbridge, Vermont because their 3rd child, Nellie Elizabeth Robinson born in October of 1857, was born in Upper Canada, which was English. "The American Revolution attracted British loyalists from America to the region around Sherbrooke, a manufacturing center, who began to covet the land and obtain government grants."
The Civil War would take place starting on April 12, 1861 with the Confederates attaching Fort Sumpter in South Carolina shortly after President Abe Lincoln's inauguration. Was this the reason that the Robinsons left Vermont for Canada across the way? Did they suspect it would happen? Why did they leave Vermont for an even colder climate?
There was the Underground Railroad. "It was formed in the late 1700s, and reached its height between 1850 and 1860. One estimate suggests that by 1850, 100,000 slaves had escaped via the "Railroad."

Emma Robinson was then born in August of 1861 while in Canada.
John C. Robinson was born on April 21, 1864 in Montreal, Canada, the English section.
The Civil War was soon over on May 9, 1865, though the last shot was fired a month later on June 22nd.
I found that Julia Robinson was born in 1865 in Vermont, though she wasn't on the 1870 or 1880 census. I found a death date of 1903 for her. Was she a part of this family? I think her name has been added incorrectly.
William S. Robinson was then born in June of 1867 in Wenona, Marshall, Illinois, where Abiathar and Julia Ann remained and where they were buried.
Julia Ann's brother, Albert Clark Tullar b: February, 1843 in Royalton, Vermont, had lived next door to each other on the August 11, 1870 census in Wenona, Illinois. Albert was a Reverend. Albert's first son, Byron Monroe Tullar, was born in Canada, the English part on June 21, 1860. (Albert lived next door to Abiatha Smith Robinson and his sister Julia Ann at age 27 on the 1870 census. He was a brick mason.
At the time he was married to Martha, and had three children; Fred, Frank and Wesesoror. He had a 10 year old boy living with him born in Canada that I cannot read the name of. It looks like Munsos (Munroe) and he was white. This boy is his first son Byron going by his middle name.) Albert's 3rd son was born in Wenona, Marshall, Illinois, so the brother in laws were staying pretty close. Did they go to Canada together? That 2nd son was born in nearby New York. People seemed to move around as much as we often do.

It's quite possible it was a family venture. Albert's father, Alonzo Tullar b: October 1809 in St. Albans, Franklin, Vermont, was on the 1861 census in Shefford Township, Shefford Co, Quebec. It's located in Southern Quebec. He later died in 1870 in Rockwell, LaSalle, Illinois, quite close to Wenona, Illinois.
Today, the native language found in Shefford, Quebec is:
Albert's brother, Samuel Tullar,born February 1840 in Tunbridge, Vermont, was also on the 1861 and 1881 census in Shefford, Quebec, Canada.
Another brother, Edwin Tullar b: April 1840 in Royalton, Vermont, was on the 1861 census.
Brother Alonzo Julius Tullar b: July 1849 in Royalton, Vemont was on the 1861 census
Young brother Charles Clarence Tullar was born in Canada in 1858, so the family must have arrived a little sooner, and of course he was also on the Quebec 1861 census with the others.
The 4 girls of the family were not listed. Girls marry, and are hard to track. I'm at a loss with Olive b: 1846, Meleca b: 1851, and Amanda and Iti born 1860. I'm presuming the twins were born in Canada.
There were many places that people could cross the border between Canada and the USA. Royalton was right across from Canada, almost. Lacolis, Quebec is listed as #31.
The Civil War was over by May 9, 1865. The family moved back to the States and was found on the 1870 census in Illinois and with the Tullars, in Iowa, but not in Vermont.
Julia's parents and siblings went to Canada about the same time she and her husband, Abiathar Smith Robinson, moved to Canada as well. She became pregnant immediately after marrying in February 1852 in Tunbridge, and then had another child in 1855 in Vermont, so must have had 2 boys, Edward and Edgar with them when they moved to Canada. I've never found evidence of these boys being in Canada, however. They must have not been on the 1861 census. Now, where could the 9 year old and 6 year old be?

John C. Robinson was born on April 21, 1864 in Montreal, Canada, the English section.
I found that Julia Robinson was born in 1865 in Vermont, though she wasn't on the 1870 or 1880 census. I found a death date of 1903 for her. Was she a part of this family? I think her name has been added incorrectly.
William S. Robinson was then born in June of 1867 in Wenona, Marshall, Illinois, where Abiathar and Julia Ann remained and where they were buried.
Julia Ann's brother, Albert Clark Tullar b: February, 1843 in Royalton, Vermont, had lived next door to each other on the August 11, 1870 census in Wenona, Illinois. Albert was a Reverend. Albert's first son, Byron Monroe Tullar, was born in Canada, the English part on June 21, 1860. (Albert lived next door to Abiatha Smith Robinson and his sister Julia Ann at age 27 on the 1870 census. He was a brick mason.
At the time he was married to Martha, and had three children; Fred, Frank and Wesesoror. He had a 10 year old boy living with him born in Canada that I cannot read the name of. It looks like Munsos (Munroe) and he was white. This boy is his first son Byron going by his middle name.) Albert's 3rd son was born in Wenona, Marshall, Illinois, so the brother in laws were staying pretty close. Did they go to Canada together? That 2nd son was born in nearby New York. People seemed to move around as much as we often do.
