Study of Robinson Families of Vermont on 1850 Census: Where They Lived in Vermont

 Nadene Goldfoot

Royalton, Windsor, Vermont, tucked into a forest

Abiathar Smith Robinson married Julia Ann Tuller (Fuller) of Royalton.  Next door was Tunbridge, Orange, Vermont where they married on February 29, 1852, Leap Year.  Julia's father was Tuller and mother was Durkee, most all living in the two places with Durkee in Tunbridge.  Durkees won out for wedding to take place in Tunbridge.  The problem is to see if I can find who Abiathar's father is as it is not on any hard copy of the normal resources like census records.  It looks obvious that it must be a John Robinson (a very common name) who was on the 1850 census living with the Tullers, and Julia Ann Tuller was a child of 15 then.  She married at 17 to Abiathar.

John Robinson was born 1803 in Tunbridge, Orange, Vermont
He was found at age 51? on the 1850 census of Royalton, Windsor, VT as a farmer living with the Tullers.  Why?
By 1852, Abiathar and Julia Ann Tuller were married in Tunbridge. Also living in Tunbridge was:
1. Charles Kent. Robinson b: 19 April 1829 b: Strafford, Vermont.  Charles was on 25 July 1870 census in Tunbridge at age 41 with father, James 70, sister-Mary A 44, James T 39.  I've got the possible idea that Charles is the son of James Robinson  who died in 1878 in Tunbridge.  Abiather could have been his brother but they were both born in 1829 but in different months.  This is part of the tree I have leading to Meppershall, England that connects to our Maine Robinson DNA cousin.
2. On 1850 census of Tunbridge was listed:  James at 49, Mary 47, Mary Anne 24, Martha T 22, Charles K 21, Alma 15 b: Nov 1833, now Noyes-66 yrs old in 1900 listed as servant.
3. In 1900 Charles K was listed as 71 and single.  He was also on the Civil War Draft enlisted on 1 July 1853 at age 34.
4. 1870 census of 24th of June listed John A b: 1827, was 43 years old in Tunbridge; also: Mary D 37, Frank C 14, John M 12, and Harris Orr.  I've got Orr's on tree.
5. A Robinson was born 19 April 1829 and died 6 Dec 1907 at Hunt Cemetery in Tunbridge.  I have Abiathar dying in 1904 in Illinois.  These could all be relatives.

Well, now I'm stuck.  I believe Abiathar's father could be this John Robinson who might be the one who was living with the Tullers on the 1850 census.  I have no idea which Robinson line this might belong to.  I don't know who John Robinson's father could be.  Back to the drawing board.

Time Line For Abiathar Smith Robinson

  Nadene Goldfoot

Abiathar Smith Robinson with son Frank Hugh Robinson, c. 1880 sitting on hay; a Farmer, in Wenona, Marshall, Illinois had large farm, horses, bull, 10 children, 5 yrs older than wife Julia Ann Tuller, whose mother was Asenith Durkee.  Asenith and Abiathar; names from Old Testament.  He would have been 21 years old in 1850 and on his own.  There was Amos Robinson of Royalton, Windsor, Vermont where Abiathar met his wife who was on the 1850 census, Julia Ann Tuller/ar, but Abiathar wasn't on the 1850 census with Amos.  Abiathar and Julia married in the town next door, Tunbridge,Orange, Vermont in 1852.  Abiathar was not on any census.  Julia Ann was 15 on the 1850 census and there was also listed a John Robinson, 51, farmer. also born in Vermont.   Was he related to Abiathar?

Time Line of Abiathar Smith Robinson/Roberson's Family

DNA from ggrandson shows Y haplogroup tested at R-L21, updated to R-FT111213 Big Y Test;  Also found DNA matched some of Fitzpatrick clan.org. of Ireland-telling more about deeper ancestry.  Family legend has it that family came over from Wales not on Mayflower of 1620  but ship after that, which could be on convoy of 1630.  John Robinson, Pastor in Holland is person who sent Pilgrims over on Mayflower.  His son, Isaac, followed later, probably in 1630.  I don't think our DNA matches theirs.  Scratch that idea as Isaac being the origin. No records connect to Wales.  No records show Abiathar's parents.   (A few records showed Roberson; spelling of Robinson?  Pronunciation? writing interpreted today?)  .

7 December 1829  Abiathar Smith Robinson is born: in Vermont

This home has a lot of potential! I see pocket doors, hardwood floors, and great windows. This home was built in 1850. It is located on .97 acres in Bennington, Vermont. That is an amazing built-in! I am not familiar with that area, but I kind of feel like they are asking too much for this property and house. It will require a lot of work. The property has a park like setting with a circular drive and a detached two car garage. Four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and 3,808 square feet. $119,000 at today's prices. How to obtain farmland in Vermont in 1850?

They wanted to travel fairly close to Royalton and Tunbrige.  To encourage settlement, Congress passed the Distribution-Preemption Act of 1841,  11 years before they married, which recognized squatters' rights and allowed settlers to claim 160 acres of land in the new territory. After residing on the property for 14 months, a claimant could purchase the property at $1.25 an acre.  That's what Aibathar would want as a farmer, 160 acres of land.  From Royalton, VT to Quebec was about 278 miles.

1850-1860  Underground Railroad-15,000-20,000 fugitives reached Province of Ontario, Canada, , 2 British North American Colonies, Upper Canada, Lower Canada; FREE LAND GIVE-AWAY, Blacks escaping to freedom could get there through the Underground Railroad.  "Ferrisburg, Vermont, about 45 miles from Royalton, had Quakers who were helping the blacks get on the Underground Railroad.  Vermont was the home and sheep farm of the Robinson family, who were Quakers. Four generations of the family lived on this property; one of those generations featured a husband and wife named Rowland and Rachel. They were abolitionists, and they sheltered or aided dozens of fugitive slaves here on the farm in the 1830s and ‘40s."  Abiathar was a Methodist.  New England was full of Robinsons. But land could be had for free, probably why the newlyweds headed for Canada.  They were farmers.
