Our Relative is Queen Anne of England; King James VII of England's Wife

 Nadene Goldfoot

We're related to Queen Anne who was married to King James VII of England and was also James II Duke of York.  Anne was born March 22, 1637, died April 10, 1671.

We're related through my mother's father's connection to the Hyde family.  Queen Anne's father was Edward Hyde.  My blog tells all about the connection.

The Hyde line found marrying into our Robinson line  through the wife of a Robinson, a Durkee, and it leads to Anne Hyde (March 22 1637- April 10, 1671) England who married King James, II, Duke of York and VII of England. They married on September 3, 1660 in London, England.   Anne's father was Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon.  Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon PC JP, was an English statesman, lawyer, diplomat and historian who served as chief advisor to Charles I during the First English Civil War, and Lord Chancellor to Charles II from 1660 to 1667

Anne Hyde was the mother of Mary II, (April 30, 1662-December 28, 1694) Queen of England  who married William III and II, King England, Scotland, Ireland and mother of  Queen Anne.(  February 6, 1664-1714) who married Prince George " Jørgen (Oldenburg) Fredericksen of Denmark.

Deborah Hyde  (October 16, 1734- 1780), an offshoot of our  Durkee line-of which our Abiathar Smith Robinson's mother-in-law was Asenath Durkee,  was  Queen Anne's 1/2  3rd cousin-4 times removed.  They shared the same surname but were not exactly direct relatives.  Deborah Hyde is our Robinson line relative.  She was married to Amos Benton Robinson (July 26, 1734-before March 16, 1812) whose great grandson was my great grandfather, Abiathar Smith Robinson (1829-October 1904).

I have fulfilled my mother's wish to be connected to the kings and queens of England.  Mildred Elizabeth Robinson would then be a 1/2  3rd cousin--9 times removed.  That makes my brother David and I  Anne Hyde's half  3rd cousin--10 times removed.

Lady Anne Hyde (22 March 1638 – 31 March 1671) was the first wife of James, Duke of York (the future King James II of England and VII of Scotland), and the mother of two monarchs, Mary II of England and Scotland and Anne of Great Britain. She was born on 12 March 1637 (Old Style) or 22 March 1638 (New Style)[1], at Windsor, Berkshire, to Frances, daughter of Sir Thomas Aylesbury, and to Sir Edward Hyde (later 1st Earl of Clarendon) of the Hyde of Norbury family. In 1659, at Breda in the Netherlands, she allegedly married James, then Duke of York, in a secret ceremony.

Final Statement of our Robinson Genealogy: Pastor John Robinson Who Sent Pilgrims Onto Mayflower Produced Best Robinson Genealogists

 Nadene Goldfoot

Pilgrims were the original refugees of America

John Robinson (1576–1625) was the pastor of the "Pilgrim Fathers" before they left on the Mayflower. He became one of the early leaders of the English Separatists called Brownists, and is regarded (along with Robert Browne and Henry Barrow) as one of the founders of the Congregational Church.   His son was probably the 1st Robinson to land in America as John stayed in Holland.  Evidently other Robinsons also left England and Scotland and Ireland and set sail for America, too.  Our line is not of this John's line.  John and Bridget White had 7 children.

New England was full of Robinsons.  My opinion is that tracing a Robinson line is one of the most difficult tasks in genealogy.  So much depends on the census information from 1799 onwards, and especially from 1850 and on, sticking with the same wife, etc.

The sure fact we have is the Big Y test of descendants' DNA results.  That is one way we can tell if we are connected to that famous Pastor John Robinson and his line or not. Our line has been tested and we are a rare group going back to Irish roots of R-FT111213, specifically with the Fitzpatrick Clan.    When my male cousin Ken was tested originally, the result of a 25 allele Y test was something like R1b1a2a1a1b4, then later as we tested more, into R-L21.

Pastor John Robinson must have had descendants that had kept their births in a large old bible for starters, and then kept it going.  My grandmother had done that for her husband, Abiathar Smith Robinson born December 1829, in Vermont with possibilities of it being New York as someone suggested that for his place of birth on one of the census information.  The others said Vermont, so Vermont it is.  He was caught on one marrying Julia Ann Tuller in Tunbridge, Orange, Vermont.  The next census found him till death living in Wenona, Marshall, Illinois.  At one time they were even living in upper Canada, the English part where a couple of their children were born.

So it's been a great challenge to decide who could have possibly been Abiathar's  parents.

I have a few people who match us with the Y DNA.  Dyer is one and the closest, James Alton Robinson  of Maine another up to a point.

So considering all this and wanting the last Robinson to be Irish/Scotch, as that seems to come together in history, I found someone.  I'm sticking with that John Robinson age 51 on the Tuller family 1850 census of Royalton, Windsor, Vermont in which Julia Ann Tuller was living with her parents at age 15.  He seems to be the best candidate for Abiathar's father.

The John living with the Tullers seemed to be a John Robinson from Calais, Washington, Vermont, which is a straight shot north of Tunbridge in Vermont.  The distance was about 39 miles from Tunbridge.

It led me from a John Robinson 51 years old in 1850 to Joel Robinson b: 1772 in Massachusetts and wife Rachel Stevens;  then to Captain Samuel Robinson b: 1742 Massachusetts and wife Mary H;  then to Josiah Robinson b: 1711 Massachusetts and wife Anna Barton, then William Robinson b: 1673 Massachusetts and wife Elizabeth Upham, and then William Robinson b: 1640 Bristol, Glouchester, or Yorkshire, England who died in Cambridge, Massachusetts and  wife Elizabeth Cutter;   then William Robinson b; 1614 Canterbury, Kent, England and wife Margaret Beach and lastly John Robinson b: 1588 in Barton St. David, Somerset, England d: Dorchester, Suffolk, Massachusetts and wife Agnes Street.  So our Irish roots are even earlier than this.

Dorchester is a Boston neighborhood comprising more than 6 square miles (16 km2) in the City of Boston, Massachusetts, United States. Originally, Dorchester was a separate town, founded by Puritans who emigrated in 1630 from Dorchester, Dorset, England, to the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

The neighborhood is named after the town of Dorchester in the English county of Dorset, from which Puritans emigrated on the ship Mary and John, among others.

Going back 8 generations, I ended with another John Robinson b: 1588, in Barton St. David, Somerset, England married to Agnes Street.  John died in 1693 in Dorchester, Suffolk, Massachusetts.  He was found by some other Robinson  researcher and I used his work.

Only going back 3 generations, I had found some interesting possible ancestors:

Colonel Jacob Davis named Calais after the French port city of the same name, during a time of general enthusiasm for things French as a result of France's aid during the American Revolution. The Wheelocks and Parkers were the first families to settle the town, in the latter part of the 18th century. In the early and mid 19th century, the Vermont wool industry spawned sheep pastures in the town. Photographs of the time show a heavily de-forested Calais. Like many small Vermont towns, Calais was devastated by the Civil War. Volunteers from Calais flocked to the Union cause, most serving in the Army's volunteer regiments. In the post-Civil War era, agriculture turned from sheep to dairy, and new families came to fill farms that were sold by the families and widows of Civil War veterans.  I remember seeing Parker on many of the early census with our Robinson people.

Right now, it's interesting to me to see these historic people and how long they lived without our modern medicine.  Right now, I'm using Eliquis, a pill to keep me from having a stroke-hopefully.  My mother had a terrible stroke at age 90 when her doctor refused to put her on this med as she might fall on her very thick and plush carpeting throughout her home and bleed to death !  That was in 2004-2005.

Mary Therese Winifred Robinson (Irish: Máire Mhic Róibín; née Bourke; born 21 May 1944) is an Irish politician who was the 7th president of Ireland, serving from December 1990 to September 1997, the first woman to hold this office.   In 1970, she married Nicholas Robinson, with whom she had a relationship since they were law students and who was then practising as a solicitor. Nicholas Kenneth Robinson (born 9 February 1946) is an Irish author, historian, solicitor and cartoonist who is the husband of the 7th President of Ireland and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson.  Together they have three children. What is his Y haplogroup?  Robinson was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, in 1946, to a wealthy middle-class Anglican family. He was born to Howard and Lucy Robinson, the third in a family of four boys. His father was an accountant who founded the City of Dublin Banker and was a prominent freemason of the Grand Lodge of Ireland. The Robinson family had been coopers associated with the brewing business of the Guinness family. Nicholas's grandfather was a coal importer.
Nicholas Robinson b: 1946 Dublin, Ireland m: Mary Bourke
Howard Robinson b: c1920 Dublin, Ireland m: Lucy ??  It would be great to see his Y DNA results.

There's so much we can learn from our ancestors as we carry parts of them within us in our DNA.  This tree is a direct line to Josiah  Robinson who is also on the Watson tree.  On the Watson tree is a DNA cousin of mine.  Hope their Watson line is correct or I was correct in having it on my tree with Josiah.  born September 17, 1711 in Newton, Middlesex, Massachusetts.  His wife was Anna Barton.

Another John that could and should be the father:  John Robinson born 1798 in Massachusetts, died in Tunbridge, Orange, Vermont :  with wife Eliza Fowler of New York:  One of their daughters was Mary Irish Robinson !    They used Edward so much and my mother's brother was Edward Kenneth Robinson.

Rix Robinson (1789–1875) was a Michigan pioneer. He was a fur trader and the first permanent Euro-American settler of Kent County, Michigan, a representative to the state constitutional convention of 1850 and a state senator.

Robinson was born August 28, 1789, in Richmond, Massachusetts. His parents were Edward and Eunice (Rix) Robinson of Preston, Connecticut. His father was a blacksmith and farmer. He was considered a studious child and regularly attended school. At age 19 he began the study of law in Auburn, New York, and was admitted to practice law in 1811. At the outbreak of the War of 1812, which his father strongly opposed, Robinson headed west to avoid the draft, with one thousand dollars given to him by his father. He moved to the large outpost of Detroit in the Michigan Territory where United States Troops were garrisoned and there was a prospering fur trade.

Robinson Genealogy in Wales But DNA Shows Ireland

 Nadene Goldfoot

Much to my surprise, my grandfather told me when very young that his people had come from Wales.  Genealogy shows England like so many other Robinsons living in New England show that they also came from England.  New England was crawling with Robinsons.

The most important DNA test of my male cousin shows that we are connected to the FitzPatrick Irish of Ireland.  They were the first to discover our connection by the Y haplogroup test.

Our geography means that Ireland and Wales share a common maritime story. The Irish Sea, the narrow strip of water which connects rather than divides us, has been traversed by our peoples over millennia.

The Irish Sea was formed in the Neogene era. Notable crossings include several invasions from Britain. The Norman invasion of Ireland took place in stages during the late 12th century from Porthclais near St. Davids, Wales, in Hulks, Snekkars, Keels and Cogs to Wexford Harbour, Leinster. The Tudors crossed the Irish Sea to invade in 1529 in caravels and carracks. In 1690 the English fleet set sail for the Williamite War in Ireland from Hoylake, Wirral, the departure becoming permanently known as King's Gap as a result.

Figures from Ireland's 2016 Census show that 1.7 per cent of the population speak Irish Gaelic every day. In Wales, it's 16.3 per cent of the population speaking Welsh every day. While both languages originate from the same source, the written and spoken forms are different.  The languages that we refer to today as being of Celtic origin are Irish Gaelic, Scottish Gaelic, Manx, Welsh, Breton and Cornish. These six languages are known as the Insular Celtic languages because they originated in what are known as the British Isles.

Known also as Irish Gaelic or Gaeilge. (In the past and still very occasionally can be called Erse)  Number of Native Speakers: 40-80,000  Everybody attending school in Ireland learns Irish and many profess to speaking the language according to the National Census. Irish is the first official language of the country but the working language for most things is English. Although, the government supports the language in many ways and introduced a Language Act in 2003 to increase the level of public services in Irish, the biggest success in the revival of the gaelic language is the growth of gaelscoileanna which immerse kids in the language and the success and popularity of the TV channel TG4.

Welsh is also known as Cymraeg or y Gymraeg  Approx 600,000 speakers:  Welsh is the Celtic language with in the healthiest state. In Wales there has been a real and quite successful effort to restore the language. The number of speakers is actually increasing. Both the teaching of the language to all children under the age of 16 and the popularity of Welsh media channels have helped reverse the decline. The Welsh Language Act of 1993 also ensures that the public can avail of services in English or Welsh.

Norman Invasion of Ireland:

Anglo-Normans gradually conquered and acquired large swathes of land from the Irish, over which the kings of England then claimed sovereignty, all allegedly sanctioned by the Papal bull Laudabiliter. At the time, Gaelic Ireland was made up of several kingdoms, with a High King claiming lordship over most of the other kings. The Norman invasion was a watershed in Ireland's history, marking the beginning of more than 800 years of direct English and, later, British, involvement in Ireland.

In May 1169, Anglo-Norman mercenaries landed in Ireland at the request of Diarmait mac Murchada (Dermot MacMurragh), the deposed King of Leinster, who sought their help in regaining his kingship. They achieved this within weeks and raided neighbouring kingdoms. This military intervention was sanctioned by King Henry II of England. In return, Diarmait had sworn loyalty to Henry and promised land to the Normans

The Irish used to raid the west coast of Britain and carry off slaves. They may even have tried a few attempts at colonisation. This would have brought them into conflict with the Welsh (of course this is before either Wales or Ireland were united countries).

The Normans conquered England then conquered Wales. Later they would conquer Ireland as well. That particular conquest is usually erroneously attributed to the English but was led by Normans from Wales. In many ways, the famous Battle of Hastings in 1066 was just the beginning for the Normans, with many challenges awaiting them in the British Isles. In order to secure the Welsh border, William the Conqueror (recently crowned as King of England) established loyal Norman nobles in strongly garrisoned Earldoms along the frontier. What followed was decades of warfare and diplomacy as these "Marcher Lords" sought to extend their domains by subjugating the stubbornly independent Welsh.

Of course they were not Welsh as such but Welshmen would have been among the soldiers that invaded Ireland.

Similarly pretty much every time British armies went over to Ireland, there would have been Welshmen among the armies.

But there has never been a war between Wales and Ireland. Wales only briefly existed as a unified state before being conquered by the Normans;   thereafter it was part of England or Britain. Similarly, there was never a state called ‘Ireland’ before the Normans got there.

Llywelyn the Great, the Welsh Prince

Wales had been in complete disarray.  In August 1063, Gruffudd ap Llywelyn was killed by his own men; his head and the figure-head of his ship were dispatched to Harold Godwinson and so, eventually, to Edward the Confessor, as the trophies of a signal victory. Within Wales itself, his death left a vacuum of authority and power. His hegemony had been founded on military might and personal dependence; it had no institutional base that could outlast his own downfall. The natural fissiparousness of Welsh ‘political’ life — if such a genteel term may be used for the litany of family and inter-dynastic conflicts, raids, kidnappings, and murders — now reasserted itself. Puppet rulers, political exiles, and adventurers competed desperately with each other and joined forces in a perplexing kaleidoscope of temporary alliances to further their ambitions. Rarely, even by its own standards, was the Welsh ‘political’ scene more fluid, its allegiances more brittle and its supremacies more short-lived than in the later eleventh century.  They were ripe to be plucked by England.

President of Ireland, Mary Robinson, married to a Robinson: In 1970, she married Nicholas Robinson, with whom she had a relationship since they were law students and who was then practising as a solicitor. Together they have three children. Nicholas Kenneth Robinson (born 9 February 1946) is an Irish author, historian, solicitor and cartoonist who is the husband of the 7th President of Ireland and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson.

My male cousin's father's name was Edward Kenneth Robinson.

My male cousin is Kenneth Arthur Robinson b: 1946.

My son was born on 9 February 1953.

It's an interesting beginning.

Robinson was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, in 1946, to a wealthy middle-class Anglican family. He was born to Howard  Robinson  and Lucy Robinson , the third in a family of four boys. His father was an accountant who founded the City of Dublin Banker and was a prominent freemason of the Grand Lodge of Ireland. The Robinson family had been coopers associated with the brewing business of the Guinness family. Nicholas's grandfather was a coal importer.

I have a big  problem with President Mary Robinson.

She does not back Israel.  She votes against Israel while I'm holding dual citizenship and am a strong

advocator for Israel, writing in defense every day. At least I'm

not related to her, but possibly her husband.

Robinson served as the twenty-fourth, and first female, chancellor of the University of Dublin. She represented the university in the Seanad for over twenty years and held the Reid Chair in Law. She was succeeded as chancellor by Mary McAleese, who had also succeeded her as president of Ireland.  Was her husband, by any chance, from the Fitzpatricks?

My father, known as Billy Meshke, the boxer at South Portland's Neighborhood House, was tough;  selling newspapers at age 4 in the city being his father was killed.

The oddest fact is that my grandfather, Jewish with ancestry from Lithuania, moved to Dublin after visiting England.  From there he was on a ship to Canada and then wound up in Idaho marrying my grandmother/Bubby, also a Litvak.  Quite a few Goldfoots/Goldfus were living in Dublin.  As coincidences happen, he chose the same business as my Robinson grandfather in Portland, knew each other,  that business was of having a wagon with horses and going to the docks and delivering boxes to people and businesses.  The difference was that Robinson was from a farm and handled 4 horses easily with his wagon, while Goldfoot with one horse couldn't do it, and the horse was soon startled, threw him out of the wagon, head was hit and he died in hospital.

My connection of Robinson to the Norman invasion of Ireland seems like the time element such a connection took place.  It goes way back.  In the meantime, my Robinson ancestors have tried to make their way known to me through genealogy.
