Westford, Chittenden, Vermont 1727-1862 of Robinsons

 Nadene Goldfoot

A Westford Covered Bridge; Vermont being so famous for such bridges.  My discovery is that all Robinsons living in Bakersfield, Franklin, Vermont are related to each other. Below I show 2 different sets, and they connect.  I've yet to prove directly that my mother's Robinson line is one of them.  My brick wall is my ggrandfather, Abiathar Smith Robinson of Vermont.  I have no proof of who his parents were, but I have 2 different DNA matches that have Robinson connections from Bakersfield.  One is a DNA discovered 2nd cousin.  Our deep ancestry of the DNA's Big Y test shows we have a direct Irish line to Ireland for the Robinson line.

I've been working on a new batch of Robinsons that have settled in Westford, Chittenden, Vermont with quite a few descendants.  I had started with some from Bakersfield, Vermont, and it turned into this group with Jacob and Levi and Zenus Robinson, among other first names.  Here are 10 generations.

In 1777, Vermont seceded from New York and England to form the Republic of Vermont. New York's redistricting was forgotten and Westford solidified its position as a town within Vermont's western County of Bennington (founded in 1779, and later splitting the area containing Westford into Rutland in 1781, Addison in 1785, and ultimately Chittenden County in 1787). Westford would remain part of Chittenden County during the state's 1791 entrance to the United States as its 14th state and through to the present.

My ancestor of Bakersfield, Vermont;;The town history began when Joseph Baker of Westborough, Massachusetts, the namesake for the village, bought 10,000 acres in 1791. Initial settlers were his son-in-law, Stephen Maynard, and his nephew Jonas Brigham, along with their families. Baker built grist and saw mills on Baker's Pond in 1794. Two years later Maynard built a tavern. In 1797, a school was established in a log cabin at the Post Road and Vermont 108. These names show up on this Robinsn genealogy.

Descendants of JACOB H. ROBINSON..age 60 in 1850 and 1860.died in 1867.  According to marriage evidence, Olive was on the 1850 census and Mary J was on the 1860 census,  Marriage dates show the opposite.

One question I have  is understanding how he had 2 wives seemingly at the same time; one on the 1850 census and the other on the 1860 census and then back to the first wife again.  Mary J. (Mary Jane?)  unknown and Olive Clement.

A lady of the period also  born in 1805 is Angelina Emily Grimké Weld (February 20, 1805 – October 26, 1879) was an American abolitionist, political activist, women's rights advocate, and supporter of the women's suffrage movement, not our ancestor but born during this period.  I wanted to know what Mary J. might have dressed or how she might have appeared.
This is a  picture of Peter Bent Brigham of Bakersfield, Vt. My grandfather Frank Hugh was tall and thin, even in his old age, so he wouldn't have looked like this famous Brigham.

From the tree above is this man who is closer to my ggrandfather.

[1] JACOB H. ROBINSON b: 1790 in Bakersfield, Franklin, Vermont    d: October 14, 1867 in Bakersfield, Franklin, Vermont Age at death: 77 est.

+Mary J. ;married in 1825 b: 1805 in Bakersfield, Franklin, Vermont d: in Bakersfield, Franklin, Vermont.  She was on the 22 June 1860 census at age 55 with children:  Mary J. 17, Trustum 18, Andrew 19, David 10 and Sophronia 12.

Charlotte Cushman, born in 1816, not our gal either, but born during

during this period. Born July 23: 19th century singer and actress Charlotte Cushman (1816-1876), first native-born star of the American stage, known for playing for a wide variety of male roles in addition to traditional female ones, and for a colorful love life, marked by a string of prominent same-sex lovers.

*2nd Wife of [1] JACOB H. ROBINSON:

. +OLIVE Polly CLEMENS Clement b: August 1816 in  Ferrisburg, Quebec, Canada d: December 03, 1900 in Bakersfield, Franklin, Vermont  M: 1837  in prob. Bakersfield, Franklin, Vermont/Tunbridge, Orange, VT Age at death: 84  in prob. Bakersfield, Franklin, Vermont/Tunbridge, Orange, VT with 9 children:  Jacob, Andrew, Oliver, Trustum, Mary Sophronia, David, Lovina and Henry. where my Robinsons may have roots with.  3 of these children were on the June 8, 1880 census so lasted a while in Bakersfield, Vermont and Arthur-a son of David.

Olive was on the September 18, 1850 census of Bakersfield at age 34 with Jacob age 60.  with 6 of the children:  Jacob 12, Andrew 11, Trusty 9, Mary Jane 7, Sophronia 4 and David 6 months old.  She also had a brother, Alfred Clement 14 living with them at the time.

                     Dirt road in rural Westford

Amazing, Here's one that landed in Portland, Oregon where I was born and raised.  He didn't have anything to do with my grandfather, Frank Hugh Robinson b: 1871 in Wenona,  Illinois whose father, Abiathar Smith Robinson, was from Royalton, Vermont-at least his wife was from Royalton Julia Ann Tuller.
