Chazy, New York: Home of Many Early-On Robinsons and other New York Towns

Nadene Goldfoot

Chazy is a town in northeastern Clinton County, New York, in the United States. The population was 4,284 at the 2010 census. The closest city is Plattsburgh, 14 miles to the south. en.wikipedia.org
Population: 4,284
Altitude: 58 m
The region was explored by Samuel de Champlain, the French explorer and navigator who mapped large portions of northeastern North America, in 1609. The town was first settled around 1763 by Jean Laframboise, who is also credited with introducing apple growing to the area. Chazy is named after French Lieutenant de Chézy of the Carignan-Salières Regiment, who was killed by the Iroquois in 1666.  It's very close to Vermont and Canada, which catches my eye in pursuit of Abiathar Smith Robinson's Robinsons.

Chazy was formed from the town of Champlain in 1804; in 1857, part of the town was used to form the town of Altona.

Benjamin Robinson, born in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut, was found living in Chazy.  Born on April 24, 1749, he died there on March 25, 1838.  You could imagine that he was one of the original settlers in 1763.  That would fit the time line.

He married Thankful Sage, daughter of Lewis Samuel Sage of a long line of Sages and Deborah Ranny.  Daniel and Thankful, of Middletown, Connecticut,  were married June 12, 1783.  Daniel had just been discharged from the Continental army then.  He had enlisted when he turned 18-on May 19, 1775.

Daniel was a descendant of John Robinson, Reverend, founder of the Pilgrim Colony at Plymouth, Massachusetts in that he had sent the Pilgrims over from Holland.  His son, Isaac, was the first of his line to board a ship about 10 years after the Mayflower's landing of 1620.  It was a part of a large fleet of ships.

One of these men is Thomas Robinson in Holland.
Nathaniel Dance-HollandJames Grant of Grant, John Mytton, the Hon. Thomas Robinson, and Thomas Wynn

His father, Daniel b:1704 was born in Tisbury, Massachusetts and wife was Jerusha Bingham.  His grandparents were Peter 1625 of Barnstable, Massachuetts and Experience Lumbert.  Daniel's ggrandparents were Isaac 1610-1620 born in the Netherlands and Mary Faunce.  Finally, his gggrandparents were the famous John Robinson, Reverend 1575-76 born in England but died in Leyden, Holland and Bridget White.

Daniel and Thankful settled in Plattsburgh near the south end of Margaret Street.  In those days, the river teemed with salmon trout and he speared them from the bridge.

Mr. Robinson survived less than 3 months after his wife, dying at his home on the Military Turnpike in Chazy, March 25, 1838.  They had had 12 children.

Their son, Lewis (1791-1864) erected a tavern on the Military Turnpike in 1823.  The Friends of the Chazy Library erected an historical marker near the tavern that said:
1823  Erected here by Lewis Sage.
That is giving the credit of the building to Daniel 's father in law, Lewis Samuel Sage, not to Daniel's son, Lewis Samuel Robinson.

Benjamin, the youngest in the family, makes you wonder what caught his eye in moving to Chazy, Clinton, New York out of all his siblings who didn't.  .

The Stratton family  came to Plattsburgh from Smithtown, L.I., along with the Platte and Tredwells. The family was in Plattsburgh in 1790.
John Stratton settled in that part of Plattsburgh which became Beekmantown. About 1809 his son,Henry Stratton, became the first settler on this road in the Town of Chazy. He spent his whole lifetime here.
Four of his sons established homes on this road: three of them, Philander, Walter and Edward, all lived between their father's home and the south end of the Hay Road, all in Chazy. The fourth one,Jonas, settled south of his father in the town of Beekmantown. When a school district was laid out
in this section,it was known as the Stratton Hill School District.
.............
On the east side of this road near the south boundary of the town is a small cemetery where Henry Stratton, his wife and some of his children are buried. This is known as the Stratton Hill Cemetery.
The Stratton Estate comprised about 600 acres of land, a wilderness when first occupied. The family did much to clear land and promote settlement along the road.

Descendants of Mary Stratton:  Even this Stratton cannot escape adding a Robinson to their tree:

Ichabod is just another different line of Robinsons.  There are many in New England.  It was the 16th most popular surname at one time. That makes it so confusing for genealogists.  They all seemed to like to use the same first names, too, except such names as Ichabod.

Another line of Robinsons, of the same line, got to other parts of New York where my ggrndfather could fit right in:  IF HE WERE BORN IN NEW YORK. On one of 3 censuses taken, he said he was born in NY.  It's because we have DNA matches with 2 people who have ancestors (I believe) from this line), that I must pursue New York as well.  Vermont was created out of New York, .  "The end of the war brought new settlers to Vermont. The first settler of the grants was Samuel Robinson, who began clearing land in Bennington in 1761."

SAMUEL ROBINSON, Captain b: April 04, 1707 in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts d: October 27, 1767 in London, England
.. +Marcy (Mercy ) Mary Leonard b: 1713 in Southbury, Massachusetts d: June 05, 1795 in Bennington , Bennington, Vermont

Bennington was the first settlement in Vermont, west of the Green Mountains. In June, 1761, the first settlers, about twenty people, came from Massachusetts. About thirty to forty more arrived later that year, including Samuel Robinson and Joseph Safford.  By the end of four years, fifteen hundred people settled on the “Hill”, now known as Old Bennington.
New York took the declaration of 1764 to apply retroactively, and considered the New Hampshire grants invalid. It therefore required land holders to purchase new grants for the same land from New York. New York then created counties in the region, with courthouses, sheriffs, and jails, and began judicial proceedings against those who held land solely by New Hampshire grants.
In 1767, the Privy Council forbade New York from selling land in Vermont that was in conflict with grants from New Hampshire, reversing the 1764 decision.
Many Vermonters felt they were still New Yorkers, perhaps including my ggrandpa.

However, I'll go on with the New York Robinsons.
