The Robinson's New York-Vermont Connection

Nadene Goldfoot

Great grandmother Julia Ann Tuller's father was Alonzo Charles Tullar or Tuller.  He was born in 1809 in St. Albans, Vermont.  He died in Rockwell, LaSalle, Illinois in January 1870, not far from where his son in law, Abiathar Smith Robinson also died in Wenona, Marshall, Illinois in 1904. (Wenona is a city in Marshall and LaSalle counties in the U.S. state of Illinois. The population was 1,056 at the 2010 census, down from 1,065 in 2000. By 1880 it had 911 people up from 879 in 1870. ). By 1858 he was in Knowlton Falls, Brome, Canada.  In 1861 he had moved to Shefford, Quebec, Canada.  No doubt this is the reason that Julia and Abiathar Robinson moved to Canada and was there for the 1860 census.

On the June 7, 1900 census, Abiathar Smith Robinson, my ggrandfather who was living in  Evans township, Wenona City,  Marshall County, Illinois at the time, said at age 70 that he was born in New York and so were both his parents.  It was actually either he or his new wife of 4 years, Mary Jane Deffanbaugh Walters, who was relating answers to the census taker.  John F. Evans was the census taker.   Wenona's population had grown to 1,486 people.

Both Abiathar and Mary Jane had been widowed when they married.  Abiathar will die in 1904.  Abiathar had married 17 year old Julia Ann Tuller in Tunbridge, Orange, Vermont on February 29,  1852.  She had died December 2, 1887.  Therefore he had remarried finally 9 years later in 1896.  It seems that Mary Jane may have been a next-door neighbor.

On the August 11, 1870 census, Abiathar, at age 41, answered the census as being born in Vermont.  His wife Julia was born in Vermont along with 17 year old Edgar but 11 year old Nellie was born in Canada along with 9 year old Emma and 7 year old John.  Their youngest then, William age 1, was born in Illinois.  They were living in Wenona, Marshall, Illinois.  (Incidently, I could not bring up Abiathar for this census today.  I had to list Albert Tuller and find him next door.) Even machines fail us at times.

He was living next door to his brother in law, Albert Tullar then.

Julia's younger brother, Albert, was born 1843 and was 27 years old.  His wife Martha was 28 and born in New York as well as their 5 year old Fred and 5 month old Frank so it's possible both families had just moved to Wenona, Illinois and obtained homes next door to each other.  Up to now, they had been in Canada.  They are not on any USA census for 1860.  Interestingly, 10 year old Monroe Tullar was listed last, born in Canada, too.  He's a little too old for these young Tullars to be his parents.   By June 13, 1880, Albert had moved his family to Fort Dodge, Iowa.  His young brother, Charles Tullar 23, born 1857, had joined him and they were living together.

My attention has been drawn to this couple on my tree:

                                       Descendants of Benjamin Robinson
Benjamin Robinson b: May 19, 1757 in Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut d: March 25, 1838 in Plattsburgh, Clinton, New York

Ben's son Lewsis was also in Plattsburgh:  Descendants of Lewis Samuel Robinson

Lewis Samuel Robinson b: September 07, 1791 in Mass/Plattsburgh, Clinton, New York d: June 08, 1864 in Chazy, New York
.. +Hannah Eldred b: February 22, 1792 in New York d: January 04, 1873 in Altona, Clinton, New York

.. +Thankful Sage b: November 18, 1758 in Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut d: December 20, 1837 in Plattsburgh, Clinton, New York

The June 7, 1880 census had Abiathar age 52 still living in Wenona, Marshall, Illinois but listed as A. Roberson.  He was a Teamster then.  Today, his name simply would not come up as previous searches provided until I used his son, Edward Rix to search and that was with Rix.  However, other Robinsons were living in the vicinity.   With Abiathar was Julia 45, John 17 b Canada, William 11 born in Illinois along with Frank 8, Minnie 5 and an unnamed child listed as 12/30 born in May that was a son.  This would have been Arthur Roy Robinson.

Abiathar Smith Robinson b: 1829
On June 19, 1880:Edward Rix Robinson age 28 was on the 1880 census of Wenona on the 27th of June with wife Jenette age 45.  He went by Rix Roberson.  He also was a teamster.  He said that his parents were both from Vermont.  His wife, Jenette, was from Pennsylvania with parents from New York.  This was on the 20th and last page of the 1880 census for this city, so I went back to page 19 and again found Abiathar as A. Roberson, teamster.  He said his parents were from Vermont and so was he.

Son Edgar Clyde Robinson was 24 in 1880.  I found him living in Andover, Henry, Illinois on the June 8, 1880 census.  He was with his wife, Mary E. 21 and their baby daughter Nellie born in April.
Edgar C was a farmer.    He said he was born in Illinois and that his parents were from New York.   He was born in Vermont.

Son John C. Robinson b: 1864 was born in Montreal, Canada.  He was listed on the 1880 census as John Roberson with his parents in Wenona, Illinois as he was only 17 then.  John died in Wenona in 1923.  His comment was also with Abiathar's parents from Vermont.

Daughter Emma, born in Canada,  is buried in the Wenona Cemetery.  She had married George D. Miller and died in Streater, LaSalle, Illinois.

William died in 1935 in Peoria, LaSalle, Illinois.  Most likely he was born in Wenona and is buried in the Wenona Cemetery.  He had married Carrie in Dana, LaSalle, Illinois in 1889.

If you visit the Wenona cemetery, you will not see a headstone for Abiathar, but will for Julia Ann.  He is buried there, though.
